NSER Outdoor Pursuits Class

Posted: March 31, 2017

Outdoor Pursuits has just started a new unit this year which has never been attempted at NSER.  In 2015, a new product took the fitness and beauty world by storm and has since gained popularity in North America and Europe.  Birch sap, or "Birch Water" as it has been marketed as, provides many health benefits.  It helps eliminate toxins from the body and is loaded with a number of amino acids, minerals, enzymes, proteins, antioxidants, and vitamins.  Students have created homemade taps (spiles) and are going to collect sap once it begins to run.  We will try this new refreshing drink and possibly attempt to convert it into birch syrup.

The class has also been busy learning how to start fires in the bush and are mastering the art of fire making with a firesteel...this challenge has given the students a new outlook on never giving up and working together to overcome difficult situations.

We will be doing some outdoor cooking next week and beginning our knot tying unit.  Hopefully by late April our fly fishing/fly tying unit will be well underway and we will be ready to get on the river shortly after ice out.
