The students and staff of NSER marked Orange Shirt day on Friday, September 29th. This day commemorates children who did, and did not, survive the Residential Schools system in Canada. This day signifies a day of remembrance, but also a day to affirm that "Every Child Matters" and the commitment to ensure a better future for all children.
NSER will be marking Orange Shirt Day this Friday, September 29th, as part of a national day of recognition of Indian Residential Schools survivors, and those who did not survive. The idea behind the symbol of the orange shirt originated with the story of Phyllis Webstad, a residential school survivor from British Columbia. On her first day of school, the new orange shirt her grandmother has bought for her was taken away and replced by a school uniform.
